Cambodia Leads ASEAN in Women's Peacekeeping Participation

Phnom Penh: Minister of Women's Affairs Ing Kantha Phavi revealed that Cambodia has achieved remarkable global standing in women's participation in peacekeeping missions, ranking ninth out of 123 countries worldwide and leading in the ASEAN region. This significant achievement was highlighted during a meeting at the National Assembly with Acting President Cheam Yeap, in celebration of the 113th International Women's Day on the morning of March 5, 2024.

Minister Ing Kantha Phavi emphasized the Cambodian government's commitment to empowering women, noting the crucial roles women play in bolstering the workforce, economy, and national reputation. She pointed out that Cambodian women are increasingly becoming business leaders, making vital decisions in both private and public sectors, and significantly contributing to global peacekeeping efforts.

"The international community highly values Cambodian women's involvement in peace missions, as evidenced by Cambodia's impressive rankings both globally and within ASEAN," stated Ms. Ing Kantha Phavi. Cambodia's participation in international efforts to promote peace and security has been notable since it joined the International Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in 1992.

Acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Cheam Yeap, expressed strong support for monitoring women's rights and gender equality advancements through the CEDAW Convention. He also backed the six strategies outlined in the Sixth Rattanak Plan, which aims to enhance gender equality and empower women and girls. This includes increasing female participation in the labor market and leadership roles, encouraging women's involvement in political decision-making, and developing social security mechanisms for women and girls.

Mr. Cheam Yeap affirmed, "On behalf of all members of the National Assembly, representing Cambodia's populace, we are committed to supporting the formulation, examination, and endorsement of laws, as well as overseeing the implementation of such laws to ensure they meet gender needs and promote equality among all genders."

International Women's Day, celebrated globally on March 8 every year, honors women's struggles and achievements in their quest for equality and liberation. Marking the 113th anniversary of International Women's Day in 2024, Cambodia's theme, "Women and girls in the digital revolution," reflects the nation's focus on integrating women into the forefront of technological advancement and innovation.
